In the Fall of 2009 Partners Radiology offered committee members the opportunity to participate in the online version of the Quality Colloquium Patient Safety Certificate Program that was part of the Healthcare Colloquium Conference held this summer in Boston. The Healthcare Colloquium Conference addressed the issues of patient safety, healthcare reliability, teams and team training, medical education, and medical errors reduction.
The magnitude of the patient safety problem has been well-documented by the Institute of Medicine and many hospitals and healthcare organizations have launched a variety of initiatives to reduce medical errors and improve safety. The Colloquium featured case studies in successful efforts in patient safety improvement and focused on presentations from organizations and individuals that have succeeded in reducing or eliminating risks to patients and improving the safety of their care.
New this year was a Patient Safety Certificate program in the form of an optional course within the conference. The purpose of the Patient Safety Certificate Program is to give participants the understanding and tools necessary to work successfully with the new Patient Safety process, requirements, and timetable.
This in-depth program included preconference readings, online training, two offsite half-day seminars with interactive presentations and workshops, and a post conference online exam.
Of the 17 participants from Partners Radiology, Partners Clinical Affairs, BWH, FH, MGH, NSMC, and NWH, 14 successfully completed the post conference exam for the Patient Safety Certificate Program.
